Can't see how this one was Done properly having not agreed the statutory amt of redundancy, and having demoted and paid the employee less while not following a proper disciplinary procedure.
The agreement is used by the employer to get themselves out of a hole, usually of their own making.
Without knowing exactly what the employer is offering and what the contract he was "asked" to sign we can only speculate.0 -
I am basing my comments on what the OP said, and the fact they don't even seem to be offering the correct number of weeks salary in lieu. Not mention of hush money on top.0

Thank you all for the really useful comments. I keep telling my Dad all this info and I think it is making him feel stronger about tackling this. They told him yesterday that they intended on doing this but no one has approached him today to say anything further so he is still waiting!0

Dont wait. Go to CAB and go to ACAS as advised in posts 14 and 18
Perhaps you could do this initially or have him call with you in t he room and hand the phone over?0 -

Contact Macmillan about benefits. They can even help with the filling in the forms. The applications are expedited if the DS1500 has been issued.x x x0 -

Stop waiting and take control.
They want to offer a settlement agreement, he gets to negotiate terms. If there is no negotiation then he doesn't sign and can tear them a new one at an employment tribunal.
Can you sit down with him and call ACAS on a speakerphone maybe?
He (you?) need to work out what he wants out of this. Don't wait for them to offer. Decide what you want, tell them you will consider the agreement if it contains XXX and meets the standards set out by ACAS (which includes review by his solicitor - sometimes the company will even pay for this just to get it done).0
