Mum had a great rainy day 'game' for us called Scrips & Scraps. We would each get a carrier bag and be sent around the house to find any... well scrips & scraps of things we could use to craft with - left over fabric, spare buttons, toilet roll tubes, any pretty waste packaging - you get the idea.
We then all assembled at the kitchen table with our 'finds', and mum had got out glue sticks, selotape, scissors, plain paper, colouring pencisl etc. And then we could craft away to our hearts content.
The great thing about this is that the treasure hunt aspect takes up as much time as the actual crafting - bit of a bonus for MumIn a better financial position than ever before (thank you MSE!). Moved back to Scotland and now trying to keep debt-free!0 -

I'm sure the bestest bit for her was she got her house cleaned whilst you were at it!0 -
when mine were little enough these are the kind of things they liked to do
- a big bag of the cheapest pasta tubes of whatever size and shape as long as it is tubular and a piece of string can go through it. happy hours spent in the garden painting pasta, making necklaces, glueing collages (remember Alice's pasta Jesus - Vicar of Dibley?), making weird animals etc. etc.
- cocktail making - cut up citrus fruit, mint leaves, ice cubes, cheapest orange and apple juices, bottle of soda water or lemonade and they would spend ages 'designing' drinks. I used to keep plastic wine glasses to make it look elegant (in their eyes anway) be prepared to taste a lot of fruity drinks!
- using old shoeboxes/cardboard boxes to make doll's house rooms or garages0 -

We have just been to the pound shop where we stocked up on lots of paints and activity books and materials. Also popped into the library where my DD has signed up to the summer reading challenge. They also have loads of free activities going on over the summer for all ages. The local council website has a list of things that are going on and a lot of them are free. Swimming is also free for kids in our area over the summer which is great.
My DD loves cooking and baking and will happily paint and draw for hours. We have also used cardboard boxes to create houses/gardens out of using things we have found in the garden. Planting seeds and looking after them has been a popular activity too (shame she doesn't like weeding!). Picnics in the park/garden/car are also fun. Knitting has become a fav activity and wool and needles can be easily picked up in charity shops.
Bug hunts can be fun too and a box filled with leaves and grass is often used to collect insects that we then look up online or in library books. Last year I got a blank book and my daughter kept a photo and written diary of her adventures over the holidays. Great fun and something to look back on!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Making a den was always popular with my two either inside or out.
They used to love sleeping in it if it was inside.
Having a picnic is good and they are happy normally to prepare the food for it. Can always be eaten inside if weather is bad.
Mine would also spend hours playing football or cricket or go on their bikes.
I am still amazed around here how few people seem to use parks I have spent many an hour in one and the boys loved it.0 -
Lol, the painting with water idea reminded me of a photo of myself as a tot - I had a paintbrush and pot of water, and was busy 'painting' in the dust on my Mom's car!
Lemon juice makes great 'invisible ink' for slightly older kids. When dry, the message can be revealed by gently heating the paper over a lightbulb.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
I lurve thie idea of a Summer To Do List - sit with your kids at the beginning of the holidays and write out a wish list of all sorts of fun and silly games/things to eat/places to go and write it up somewhere visible and funky. Found the idea here:
