Independent witness signing mortgage deed

Hi
I am a first time buyer. I exchanged contracts last week and completion is Tuesday.
I have received the mortgage deed in the post this morning to sign in front of an independent witness. As it's a bank holiday I'm unable to get in touch with the solicitor for advice.
My question is who counts as an independent witness? Can my family sign it? Also family living at the same address?
Many thanks
I need to hand deliver over the weekend so it's there for Tuesday morning.

It can be anyone over the age of 18 but not someone with the same surname or a family member.0

To be strictly correct - it cannot be a person who is an immediate family member or his any interest or involvement in the transaction.
They are signing to say that they have seen execute the document and that you were not being placed under duress to do so.
A little old lady at the bus shelter is perfectly acceptableHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
One of your neighbours would be fine (assuming no family relationship or interest in the transaction).0

I had the same last August - I asked my next door neighbour to sign mine!0

I had a receptionist at the sols office sign as witness on some of ours (she was not linked to our case in any way) and a work colleague signed as a witness on some of the other paperwork.0

As I thought, but wanted to double check. Thanks for all your replies0
