Candle Making

I love scented candles but the natural ones are getting so expensive now. I thought I might have a go at making my own. Has anyone tried this? It would be great to get some tips.

although there are 'how to' instructions online for making wicks, it's a lot more reliable to buy your own. They look as though they are just string, but I've tried plaiting, soaking in wax etc and string does not burn as well in my experience.
Decide on your container and get the correct sized wick for the diameter

I have been making candles for a while now since I like to know exactly what goes in them. If you repurpose your recycling into candle containers, then making your own works out quite cheap - under a pound for 200ml candle. Unfortunately you must buy your ingredients in bulk (kilo of soy wax will work out around £10) and also pay for delivery if order online. So you need to calculate how many candles you'd be gong through on a monthly basis to figure out whether it is all worth investment and labour.

You can start by recycling pound shop candles into nice containers or adding what you want to them;)

A couple of months ago, someone posted a link to a supplier of scented wax remnants, but I can't find it.

    Can anyone help, please ?

you can buy candlemaking kits for under £15. it may be an idea to try one of these to make sure that this is something you want to invest in and do properly or just recycle old ends of candles for the occasional candlemaking fest.

My family & friends know never to throw out their candle ends - they give them all to me. I've never had to spend money on wax yet :)

    I do this too!

I decided to recycle old candle wax when I had a huge scented candle and the wick burnt down but half the wax was left. I keep wax assorted by colours in plastic bags. I bought a bunch of wicks that have the metal bottoms. I keep old candle holders and bought a 50p small pan for melting the wax. All I pay for then is 7p for a wick! I have had times with not enough wax so just used complimentary colours to make one candle- looks beautiful with the different colours now!

Candle making is fun and cheap, and no waste which I love.
