Child Maintenance - when do we stop paying?

Just after some advice please or does anyone have experience of the following; My hubby has a son from his first marriage who turned 18 in April and is currently in full time education. However from what we can gather he will not be returning to college in September. My hubby has contacted the CSA regarding maintenance payments and when he can cease paying them. He has been told he must continue until the day before his son turns 20 even if his son doesn't go back to college and signs on.
His mother will also still be able to continue collecting his child benefit and that the maintenance payments must continue in line with the child benefit. However from reviewing a number of websites we are deducing that the information provided by the CSA may be incorrect; apparently child benefit would end if/when he either gets a job or receives certain benefits (eg Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance or tax credits). So we are assuming that we would cease payments also. I'm asking anonymously as unfortunately my hubby and his ex-wife are not exactly on easy going terms in reference to money;
