Advice/Financial help to retrain after redundancy?

Hi,

A friend of mine is being made redundant in September. She has had the job since she was 16, and has no qualifications to help her get a new job. The small lump sum from redundancy will be used to pay off some debt and to live while she tries to get employed again.

She would like to retrain in something - preferably something police- or crime-related, but other subjects are in discussion - but obviously doesn't have the money for a full course at university, college or Open University.

Is there any assistance for those out of work, or with low financial means, to get education/training like this? She's very hard working and willing to study for the 1 or 2 years it would take, but doesn't have the money to do it!

I could be wrong but I understand that you can claim benefits whilst studying part-time. Perhaps your friend could look into part-time options? That would also enable her to work (once she finds a new job) part-time whilst also retraining.

She can study part time with OU whilst claiming JSA. She can fund it through student loans. A part time degree will take at least four years.
