I don't think the conduct authority would do anything until you spoke to someone more senior and exhausted the internal complaints procedure.

    I am furious too.

I bought something a few months ago online and they did a soft check at that point.

Not bought anything since and they have now done another SECOND check! randomly....

equifax alerted me, plus it also alerted my husband who would be linked, although there is no actual check on his file that shows - just on my file.

I do not think I opened a credit account and I have had no paperwork.

How do I know (other than asking) if I have a next credit account.

    I intend to complain.

How dare they keep on checking me, no purchases either, so it is out of the blue.

I realise that this is a necropost, but I wanted to point out that Next are STILL performing a credit search when you buy online and pay in full, declining an application for credit option, but that is not my issue with them.
I ordered from them online in March 2016 (and they performed a search on 10th March, as per their terms and conditions) but then Next performed another search on 28th May 2016 with no valid reason to do so - I had not ordered from them or even logged on to their website since my order in March so a second search is completely unwarranted and I am fighting it...
Equifax queried it after I logged an incident with them and Next came back with "The searches are valid" so Equifax closed my incident and told me to contact Next directly (I already had). Equifax have been something of a disappointment here.
Next have now confirmed that my account is closed and no further searches will be performed but I am now fighting to get the search in May 2016 removed and will NOT give up. I am lucky, in that my credit file is in good health so it will have little effect on my rating (if any) but that is not the point. Next are performing searches without consent or good reason and this kind of behaviour from a major retailer is simply disgraceful.
I will post an update here when there is one worth mentioning.
