too many deductions from pay.. please help!

I think I have had too much in deductions taken from my pay but would like a little bit of help as im not fully sure and dont know how to go about it. Here is some background info..

Last job my salary was 14,440 and i finished work on the 21st march, i got paid on the 21st of march and they work three weeks back and one in advance, so I got three weeks worth of pay. My new job i started on the monday 24th march with a salary of 18,650. I had missed the cut off for pay so I would have to wait until the 28th april and get 5 weeks pay..Here is my payslip details:

Earnings Qty Rate Amount
BASIC PAY X1 1,554,167 1,554.17
BASIC PAY ADJUSTMENT X6 71.455 428.73
TOTAL; 1982.90

Deductions
PAYE 228.60
NIC 158.39
STUDENT LOAN 51.00
TOTAL : 437.99

NET PAY THIS PERIOD : £1554.91

PAY ADVICE TO DATE:
TAX CODE: 1006L
TAXABLE PAY: 1982.90
TAX: 228.60
NIC EES 158.39
NIC ERS 182.15

Now I was expecting to pay abit more in deductions since this is 5 weeks worth of pay rather than 4 weeks worth. But my friend earns 19k a year and only pays around £12 in student loan payments!

I used the income tax calculator on this website and I was expecting to pay around about £13 in student loan, £165 in tax and £125 in ni. Am i missing something here?? As far as I have looked im on the correct tax code so not sure how this can be wrong??

Any advice would be great. Thanks!:(

  • I get 18.5k a year and only end up with 1200 after tax etc.

With regards to tax calculator I have found it not to be completely accurate and is best as an advisory in my opinion. The student loan does seen high though , as I am on 100 less than you and pay 15-16 a month to SLC.
The truth is out there... and I want to believe

Enter the details into listen to the taxman website and the deductons are correct (Entered as Monthly pay)

Bascially your normal monthly pay is £1554.17, and this would equate to £13 student loan repayment.

However, the extra 428.73 is therefore all subject to 9% student loan deduction (£39), the same way as it is subject to 20% Tax (as it is all over the personal allowance) and is all subject to National Insurance (Ie: all over the Earnings limit).

Basicallu anything you earn over and above you normal wages (assuming you are eraning the relevant thresholds) will be subject to 41% deductions (9% SL, 20% Tax, and 12% NI)

    Hope this helps

Why does this feel like a payroll student asking for homework help? Seems like a lot of similar threads in the past couple of days.
