2 jobs, under 30 hours?

Options
I've just started a second job as neither of them are willing to give full-time shifts.

I'm only working a total of 24 hours and earning around £8,000... Will I still be taxed, even though I'm earning so little?

I don't currently pay tax on the first job, but have been told you are taxed on your second regardless of how little you're making.

You shouldnt pay tax on £8k, you can either ask your tax office to split your tax code between the two employers, or claim the tax back at the end of the tax year.

You are taxed on all earnings above your tax allowance. If you do not use all your allowance, which you can work out from your tax code, what is left of it is used against your other income.

your second job will automatically put you on a BR tax code i.e. you will pay 20% tax

however you can contact HMRC and ask for your tax free allowance to be spread between the two jobs so neither is taxed

Please call HMRC and give them info re annual earnings before tax from both jobs. Tell them that you wish to split your tax-free allowance and get cumulative tax codes. They should know exactly what you mean.

Once the cumulative codes are used, you should get tax back (backdated to 6/414) through your wages, if you have paid any.
