Hi new to this forum and would like some advice have a debt with ace which has now been passed over to moorcroft debt recovery ltd had a letter from them in march to say they will accept a payment of £120.00 per month debt is £2031.35 I ignored letter as I cannot pay this amount . Yesterday evening there was a knock at my door opened door to find some man on my doorstep he asked my name and d.o.b to which I stupidly replied he said he had a debt from ace and how much was I willing to pay I offered 5.00 a week he said it would have to be 10.00 as it really should be more than that as the debts for £2000.00 he then said can I pay now I said no as I didn't have money on me he said he will call back Friday is he legally allowed to do this if not what can I do on Friday when he calls or have I set myself up for paying this man by telling him my name and d.o.b slightly worried about him calling Friday as he seems a bit pushy .

Who are ACE? A bailiff, or just a common/garden debt collector? If latter, tell them to jog on and write to the company TELLING them how much you will be sending them and at what frequency. If it is a REAL bailiff, then advise and we'll have some better information on how to deal with him.

I suspect you have a pushy debt collector on your hands, in which case, firmly close the door and do as I have advised above.

You don't have to answer the door, no, they are not bailiffs and have no rights.

Ignoring them won't make it go away though. You should contact them by phone or letter and come to some arrangement for repayment otherwise the debt collector will just keep coming back.

Ack! Debt collector and NOT bailiff.

They have as much right on your property as a dog relieving itself on your fencepost...treat with the same contempt.

Write to your creditor telling them how much you will pay them and at what frequency. Make it clear you will only correspond in writing and that you will not entertain any door step intrusions in future. Failure to comply with these stipulations will result in a complaint to the higher authority.

As pp have said contact the creditor and set up a payment plan with them that's affordable for you so you can pay it back.
They should then contact the debt collector's and inform them you`ve acknowledged.

I take it when you say creditors you mean Ace and not Moorcroft I'm to get in touch with will try but tried this with an older debt and just got passed back to debt collector agency as they said it was nothing to do with them .

The debt with ace is from sometime last year and have found a letter from them dated in January of this year to say that as I haven't paid that they are sending my details of my account to moorcroft debt recovery ltd who are authorised to call at my home to collect the debt if this is correct shall I just pay debt collector at the door on Friday I'm really not sure what to do as I'm not sure I will be able to pay the 10.00 pound he is asking for each week what can I say to him when he calls Friday as I have a feeling he could be quite intimidating if he dose nt get what he wants

Well, it was a hope that it might be statute barred, but apparently not.

Ok, same rules as above. You dont have to speak to the debt collector, you dont have to agree to anything they want. You are perfectly within your rights to simply close the door. I advise you to deal with this in writing and tell them formally what you are prepared to pay and in what frequency. That's all you have to do. They cant demand more than you have or demand you pay whatever figure they pluck out of the air.

    It is that simple.

    ^ Sound advice.

However, it seems you need to get to the route of the problem to set-up a repayment plan as this is not going to go away...I wish you all the best with this.
