Help Ive been overpaid!

I have just been informed that I have been overpaid to the sum of £400+. As you might expect Im a little concerned as to how this may have happened. Incidentally there are others in the company it has happened to. The response ive received from my manager is that there was a "glitch" in the computer when one system was changed to another. Ive looked at my contract and it says any money must be repaid if there has been an O/P. So fair enough, but this apparently stems back from 2012 to date!. Ive had a breakdown from my manager as to how he thinks it may have occured. My pay office is staying quiet and leaving it to the manager to sort.
My next step I think is to raise a grievance to get some sort of answer from th P.O. Can anyone suggest any other ammunition i can use against them?. Ive also had £155 taken out of my wages at Christmas they said that was because of an overpayment. It seems they can do what they like without an explanation as to why. Many thanks for reading.

By all means ask for a breakdown and double check that it is correct but ultimately they are entitled to recover any overpayment. All you can do is ask to pay it back over a reasonable period of time.
It is an employee's duty to check their pay is correct just as much as the company's.0 -

You check the gross pay to start with.
Then check for errors on the deductions, HMRC have a calculator or listentotaxman will get it close
When I worked for an umbrella I had to point out 6p discrepancies in the way they did NI and TAX.
Check your payslips carefully for gross and net pay.
Also insist on a breakdown of the overpayments
they got it wrong once they may have got it wrong again0 -
Thanks for that what complicates it further is we had a pay rise and it was backdated.!0
