Hi I am looking for advice regarding my son who has been studying in Scotland and obtained a degree in marine biology at Napier university in Edinburgh but now wants to do a masters in York .
He did not have tuition fees to pay while in Scotland and his student loan was arranged through saas.
Will he have to arrange a bank loan to cover the masters degree or is there a government organisation which provides any funding.
Thanks for any help

  • I think you will find the answer is no unless he can find a prospective employer prepared to assist.

I don't think there's government funding available for post-graduate study in the same way there is for under-graduate courses regardless of whether your son chooses to study in Scotland or England.

Tell him to go along to his nearest reference library to consult the Educational Grants Directory and other similar volumes. There are quite a lot of small scholarships and grants available, some for very specific purposes. While he may not be able to finance his whole course this way, he should be able to get a decent amount of money from different sources. He should also study the York Uni website - lots of universities have scholarships on offer which often people just don't apply for

In general people who want to do a Masters need something like a bank loan (perhaps packaged as a Career Development Loan)... be aware that interest is added and repayments begin as soon as the course is over, whether or not the borrower has an income! Certain job-related Masters courses do attract funding, for instance bursaries from the NHS to train for medical professions. And the university department may have helpful information.
