3 month notice period?

I have started jobhunting as my current fixed term contract finishes in August. I would like to see out the end of the contract, however, if the right opportunity came up I'd seriously consider leaving without completing the project.
I've seen a job advertised today which has asked to include your salary expectations and notice period. I'm thinking I could say that I have a 3 month notice period but this could put them off. Technically I do have a one month notice period but like I said, ideally I'd like to see out the end of my current contract.
What do you think - say a month or 3 months? Has anyone had a 3 month notice period before and if so, how did prospective employers react to this?

It is quite common in many fields but it would be far better to tell the prospective employer the truth!0 -
From what you have said .....
Your notice period is 1 month.
The length of the project is 3 months.
If somebody askes what your notice period is, the answer is 1 month.0 -
Thanks both. So do you think it would be best to mention in my Covering Letter that I'm contracted until August but have a notice period of one month?0

The job advert asks you to include your salary expectations and notice period in a covering letter.
Your covering letter should therefore include your salary expectations and notice period.0 -
Your contract length is irrelevant if you can quit with 1 months notice. Don't even bother mentioning the contract.0

How much do you want to see the contract through? How desperate are you to get this new job? Any hints of urgency in the advert? What sort of level are you at?
Only occasionally are job vacancies well planned and so most employers like someone ASAP however 3 month (or longer) notice periods arent that uncommon and for the right candidate in most circumstances an employer will be willing to wait.
Now assuming it isnt an entry level role or one of these public bodies that require even MD grades to fill in the same basic job app form then you dont really have to answer the direct question asked but give a slightly alternative approach of saying the date of when you'd be available from (without mentioning the phrase notice period) with a sub text that this is negotiable.0 -
don't say 3 month that's a lie.
say available from dd/mm or with one month notice.
is this definately a non renewal situation?0 -
My son wanted to leave his job and was told he had to give 3 months' notice. He was only on a temporary contract and would have lost the new job if he had wanted to make them wait 3 months. They eventually agreed to let him 'just' give a month's notice.
I doubt many employers would wait that long so the 3 months' notice could well be a deal breaker. I wouldn't even mention it to them.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -

I've hired people with a 6 month notice period and waited them to work it.
It very much depends on the grade of the job, the quality of the candidate and the urgency of getting someone in.
Sure, a telesales call centre that churns over 20 staff a month aint going to wait. Hiring a highly specialist, qualified person with exactly the right experience for what you need then you will wait.0 -
Thanks all, I'm just going to say 1 month notice. My current contract is definitely not renewable.
My current position is probably described as intermediate managerial.0
