Training Costs when on JSA

Hi all -hope i can get some advice. Son is unemployed and started claiming JSA. He has the opportunity to do a PTS course to work on the railways but the 10 day course costs about £1000 all in. He has told them at the jobcentre that he could do the course if he can get the money together. They have said there is no help for funding it! Anybody know of anywhere that would help with funding? I always thought the jobcentre were there to help get people back in to work.
I have tried searching but to no avail so hoping someone on here will have come across this before.

Thanks

  • they are there to help but 1000 pound, if it was offered freely the bill would be millions.

How long ago did he start claiming JSA? There's pretty much nothing available from the job centre regarding training within the first 6 months, or so I've been told
  • He could try for a career development loan or a loan from family. If he is young under 25 he could try approaching the Princes Trust and asking them for help. They wont pay it all but may give him help towards it.
  • JCP are unlikely to pay for courses unless there is a job waiting at the end of it. He could contact the local FE College to find out if they have any ESF funding for the unemployed although PTS is rarely covered by colleges.

Is he guaranteed a job providing he completes this course? If not the jobcentre is right not to fund it.
  • I had a similar position where I was offered a job as long as I completed a first aid course which was £125 I didn't expect any help as I was only signing on for 2 weeks however the job centre agreed to pay the full amount

Thank you to all who have replied. He has been told that the company sponsoring the training will take him on once he has completed his training. I will have a look at the options mentioned - if he could get a bit of help towards it then it would help.

    Once again thank you.:)
