How to prepare and protect myself (work pay)

I've recently transferred to a new store within the same company and my new manager is giving me lots of supposedly paid extra hours. For the coming week I'm scheduled to do about 45 hours compared to my contracted hours of just 31.5. I've heard from many people who have worked there or work there that he will try not pay you and in the past hasn't paid certain people when doing this. I can quite believe he will try and do this, and not pay me the overtime.

How can I avoid this situation? As in, how can I be prepared encase this did happen? I have the rota saved which proves my hours but of course I suppose he can always say it was changed or something etc I'm trying to think of a way to get evidence of me being present at the workplace throughout the contracted hours. The only thing that comes to mind is taking photos of my first name printed on sales receipts which I could take a few of every day. Store cctv expires every 7 days so not really viable option.

Otherwise any other ideas? Also who would I go to if this did occur. The CAB?

    But surely HR would tell me that the manager has filled me in for X amount of hours. They would just tell me that I wasn't due any overtime I would have thought?

    Take pictures of the rota, raise any problems with what you're paid directly with him & if he's failing to pay you what's owed more than once go above his head. Savvy_Sue's idea isn't a bad shout either, prevention rather than cure!

    Get all changes to the rota in writing, paper or emails, if verbal change send an email please confirm you want me to work..... which is a change from schedule ......

    make sure the rotas are dated.

    if you get short changed go up the chain same day,

    Try to check with payroll in advance what hours they have for you, if wrong get them fixed complain to manager HR and payroll.

    might be worth asking payroll/HR when they process the timesheets so you can call or get them to call you with what's been submitted.

    nip this in the bud early.

    If necessary consider a grievance that you manager is falsifying working records, a serious allegation, so get backup from those that have told you it has been happening to them.

    I suspect if you make it clear you won't play ball, the manager will either have to do your hours correct or more likely will limit your overtime.

    Have you more than 2 years service?

    If you don't get satisfaction from HR, you could go over their head to the CEO office,

    Collect as much information on the level of complaints that have been made by others.
  • Expect an early exit from your job in the next wave of redundancies too.

    Take a photo of the building/door each time you arrive/leave. I suspect taking photos of receipts would cause potential issues and look bizarre/odd behaviour that, in itself, is likely to lead you into trouble.

    When your colleagues were underpaid in the past, what reason was given for the underpayment ?

    Find that out and you can then work out how to avoid it !
