Electronic Water Filter

I have tried this in the In My Home section without a single response. You guys on here strike me as being folk who would look into a solution to a hard water problem, and a greener version of the salt-based water softener might be what I am trying to describe below. I have heard of reverse osmosis but wonder if there are two different technologies here:
Having moved from a very soft water area to a very hard one I am finding the white stains everywhere and poor dishwasher performance pretty intolerable.
I have come across an electronic one which fits onto your pipe near where the mains enters the property and allegedly it interferes with the makeup of the water and causes the lime to become soluble. Does anyone have experience of such an item please? It is about £200 and I would also have to have some wiring work done and it's not all about money-saving, comfort and convenience also come into it.

Dunstable is a hard water area. The local church was persuaded to have a 'magnetic' water softener fitted to the cold feed pipe to their boiling water tea maker. Totally useless. The whole thing chalked up within the year.Living_proof wrote: »I have tried this in the In My Home section without a single response. Thanks Dave - you have just saved me over #200 (what has happened to the pound sign suddenly?). I had a salt softener system about 30 years ago in Northampton which is also a hard water area, but nothing like the area I live in now. Even the dishwasher can't get the grime off the tea cups.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

I have very hard water (south coast), and it's a pain.
For the dishwasher, I've found that I really need to use salt, powder/gel and rinse aid. Tablets or just detergent are hopeless with hard water. Green detergents are fine however, I think faith in nature gel is very good, but make sure there's plenty of salt and rinse aid in their dispensers.0 -
The first time I saw one was at the Ideal Home exhibition about 25 years ago. I made a note of the patent number so that I could get a copy and build one of my own.
The patent office had never heard of it.0 -
The one I saw was marketing by the East Midlands Water Company (not Board, please note). I am hopelessly untechnical but would invest if I thought I could get rid of the white water marks on everything.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

A dessicant dehumidifier is a good source of soft water (and heat) for us solar PVers who don't need to worry about the electricity costs.0

Yes, the water is ideal for all sorts of things. We use the water from the dehumidifier for the steam iron and for watering ericaceous plants.Kernel_Sanders wrote: »A dessicant dehumidifier is a good source of soft water (and heat) for us solar PVers who don't need to worry about the electricity costs.
