When I was out walking during the winter I passed someone who had the brightest headlight imaginable and they said it was actually a mechanic's headlight
Will need to get one for an over-the-night walk and was wondering if any mechanic's here could recommend one.

I don't know what light they were using but I'd guess it's something using a Cree XML-T6 LED emitter or similar - lights using these leds can be picked up cheaply and they're very bright. I use similar lights for night time mountain biking and they work well for that.

All depends on your budget this one here is 1800lm which is very powerful, if there not lieing.

But personally for night walking i wouldn't want anything of silly lighting levels to try and maintain as much as possible my natural night vision.0 -
I bought this one in December (similar to the one above) and I must say it is very good. The only downside is you would need to buy 18650 batteries and a charger (I had them any for my e-cig).

For the price they are exceptional.
The type from poundland are OK (don't last long) but will not throw a beam.0 -
I'm not sure why you would need a mega powerful headlamp for close quarters mechanical work.
When we go caving most people use lamps with 200-900 lumens. 95% of the time I never seem to use more than 250 lumen setting. Even the best 2000 lumen lamp is useless with a pencil beam and incapable of illuminating the largest caverns and mines. The man without a signature.0
