Asking for a pay rise

I have my review with my line manager soon and thought it would be a good time to ask for a pay rise.
My previous boss left a few months ago, was not replaced and some of the additional responsibility has fallen onto my lap, essentially my job description has changed. Also I have had to travel a lot more (again, not in my JD) and claim expenses back, these are quite high and its on a regular basis.
Due to the nature of the business this is likely going to be my responsibility for the next 1-2 years but not after that, my doing this is purely an interim thing and so I'm not sure they could justify a pay rise. However if i left my job, i am pretty sure they couldn't ask the next person to do this unless they increased the salary.
I have never asked for a payrise before and I don't know if it's cheeky to ask. Any advice appreciated, I don't even know how to word the request.
PS Sorry if this post is a bit vague, I don't want to be identified!

If you think you are worth a pay rise then pull together all your facts, present them in a calm manner along with what your expectations are.
Ask yourself - if I do not get a pay rise will I look elsewhere for a new role or will I continue working for the company?
If the latter then you may consider it best to carry on with the increased responsibility on the same pay, working on the basis that it will look good on your CV and may make you more employable within the company if further roles become available.:jI am an Employment Law Paralegal and an experienced Human Resources Manager and offer my guidance as simply that ... guidance :j0 -
If you think this is long term but temporary how about asking for an additional responsibilities allowance/payment while you are undertaking extra/different work rather than an out and out raise. or ask for a raise and if they refuse ask for it temporarily as a compromise.0
