verbal job offer

So - I had an interview yesterday morning and got a phone call at around 4pm offering me the job.
They said that they would be sending the paperwork though to me today - not sure if that is likely to be by email or post but anyway. I sent them an email this morning confirming I wanted to accept the offer (that I had already accepted verbally the day before) - but I haven't heard back yet.
Now, I am well aware that its too early to worry - but my question is general rather than specific to my current situation. I am assuming that a verbal offer basically means well - nothing - and one has to have the paperwork to even start believing that the job is yours these days? My recent job seeking activities have left me very wary unfortunately so I am not even considering celebrating yet.

You've got the job, they wouldn't have told you otherwise.0

In the absence of unusual special terms the maximum protection you have in the first two years is whatever notice period is agreed.
Fair enough I suppose. I guess I am just overcautious seeing as I have worked my butt off for 8 months to get this far. lol
Its almost like I don't quite believe I actually made it. And there are lots of horror stories out there about getting a verbal offer and then never hearing from the company ever again.0 -
Is the offer unconditional?
If it's contingent on references hang fire.
Congratulations btwDon’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
Oh yes I forgot to say congratulations!0

Congratulations melysion! Im sure everything will be fine and you're worrying needlessly! Although I could understand why!
I take it you were offered the job you really wanted? Was it one that you're over qualified for?0 -

Yes - that's the one.
I remember getting a verbal offer once and we agreed a start date on the phone but I never did get an offer letter! I pitched up on the first not absolutely positive the job was mine. Come to think of it, maybe they just let me stay 'cos they didn't know how to tell me there'd been a terrible mistake!0
