Multiple Coding Notices

Options
Hi

I received two coding notices today for the 2014/15 tax year.

One says that my tax code is "BR" and one says that my tax code is "1004L".

I am not sure why I have received two, as I have only one employer.

Both notices have the same tac reference and were issued on the same day.

Is this something I need to query with HMRC?

Thanks, in advance.

Marc

  • HMRC have a habit of messing up coding notices IME. You should make sure your employer uses the correct notice (any half decent payroll department should realise HMRC have made a !!!! up) but if you're not sure, you can just give HMRC a ring and ask them why they've sent you two.

Do you receive a private pension?

If not, HMRC have made a lot of mistakes this year where they have introduced a system called RTI, where employers report every month who is employed and what they were paid. There have been lots of problems with the implementation and sometimes they create an extra employment automatically when they they can not match the payment correctly, hence they think that you have two jobs (even though it is the same employer!)

It may not be this, but either way, call them and they will be able to sort it out for you.

Have given up on phoning HMRC - every time I have tried, its taken over 3 minutes to get through the automated call filtering, to be connected to an extension that rings engaged and then hangs up!

I will write to them instead or, perhaps, drop in at my local Enquiry Centre, before it get closed later this year...

If I were you I'd wait until 08:00 hrs when they open their switchboard.

If you only have one job and no pension income, and cannot contact HMRC, just fill in a P46 at your employer and choose the statement that is applicable to you. This should give you the right code instantly. This means if since 6/4/14, this job has been your only source of PAYE income, the P46 statement A will give you a cumulative tax code. As soon as it is used, you will get any refund backdated to 6/4/14, if you have overpaid because the employer was using BR tax code.

There was a problem with the phone lines on Friday morning and anyone calling would have gotten an engaged tone. Try again on Monday morning.

MichelleUk is correct in that there have been the usual teething problems with the new RTI system which started in April 2013. If your employer has sent in a payment submission (your payslip) and it hasn't included your payroll number but HMRC have an employment with a payroll number on it then it looks as if you have a second employment with the same employer. Similarly the other way round - they send in the payslips with a number when they haven't before.

    Hence the 2 tax codes.
