Self Employed questions

Hi All,

I've recently looked into a transport job and have discovered they work on a self employed basis.
The vehicle, fuel, insurance etc will all be provided by the company. Essentially I just need to turn up and drive, but would be paid a day rate on a self employed basis.
This is all completely new to me and was hoping someone may be able to offer advice/help/tips etc on this subject.

Thanks

Hippy999

Hi. You will need to register for self assessment tax and complete a tax return. Also register for Class 2 national insurance contributions which you can pay by direct debit.

Will you only be working for this client? If so then the tax office may not see you as self employed check on the hmrc website's it is very clear, and call them if you need help, they are very nice and will explain the rules to you.
  • Thanks for the reply, I will take a look at the hmrc website.

If you find-out that you are really self-employed, then opt to pay Class 1 NI contributions (same as PAYE) that way, should you find yourself out of work in the future (or there is a lull in work where you are) you can claim full JSA.
