Changing Business name

I'm currently looking into changing my business name, mainly for the reason that what I'll be doing will change/expand and so will encompass this.
What I want to know is whether this has any repercussions with regards to my books or anything else. Is it just a case of contacting HMRC and changing it and letting my accountants know too? Obviously now it would mean changing in the middle of the tax year so again don't know if that affects things.
It's not a limited company just sole trading.
We're looking at getting a mortgage towards the end of this year/beginning of next and don't want to do anything that may adversely affect out application.
