Expecting to win. Winning should be a hope, not an expectation. Otherwise you are likely to mainly win disappointment.

The Comping Guide has plenty of info and tips
  • My advice is try to choose one small thing you'd really like to win (for example, The Desolation of Smaug on DVD which has fairly recently come out) then search for comps on that particular prize and enter them all. Much more likely than all the big cash/holiday ones. I ended with three copies of Benedict Cumberbatch's last DVD that way! :D

Soft copy, hard copy, good for all occasions... ;)

How many comps do you enter a day, 21titch?
    I enter 200-300 a day.
I win on average 1-2 small prizes a week.
That makes my 'hit rate' 1-2 in 1,400-2,100. Which is considered a pretty good hit rate by many here, and I definitely consider myself lucky :D

The ways I think to increase likelihood of a win:
Effort competitions (writing, designing, photographing etc).
Searching out comps that aren't on here (e.g. through your local press / blogs you follow, etc).
Niche competitions also often have less entries, so make sure you enter for any that are your hobbies (e.g. fencing / jujitsu etc).
Make sure you check back on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram comps you really want to win - sometimes, you won't receive proper notifications to say you've won.

If you look at it this way, say on average competitions have 4,000 entries, and you enter 100 discrete competitions a day, then you might expect one win every 40 days. Of course you might get more than that, but you might also get nothing. Things would naturally be slower when starting out as well as you will probablly be entering competitions that don't end for weeks or even months.

Bigger prized competitions have many more entries than 4,000 though, and competitions that are easy to enter can have large numbers entering to, such as liking/sharing on Facebook and retweeting on Twitter.

The upshot is don't expect to win, and if you do, be grateful.
Thanks to all OPs and everyone who helps/posts etc!!:T

Completely agree with Blulu! I just enter and forget, then when I get a wem through, it is a lovely surprise! :o
:TA big thanks to all who post and sprinkling lucky dust to all who enter :smileyhea
