Hi guys

I do weight lifting, and trying to keep my food costs down. I noticed Farmfoods pork loin steaks are pretty high in protein and cheap (30 for £10). Just wondering if anyone buys these, and what cooking methods they use to keep them tasty?

Thanks in advance

Buy one bag and see how much water and filler there is. This will be especially apparent when defrosting and then cooking. You will be much better off if you can find a market stall butcher in your vicinity that offers meat packs. Ours does things like 3 joints for £10, 5kg large chicken breasts for £20, or mixed packs ranging in price but with massive amounts of meat (you get to choose) and they do not contain filler or water either.

    Xx

Thanks for your reply :) Thats a great price for chicken. The cheapest I can find is 5kg for £25.

Just buy a bag and see how it goes! If just using as a protein source you may still find them suitable for what you want.

I don't seem to have any cheap, local butchers near me like a lot do here and I am envious, but there is a halal supermarket selling chicken breast for £4.49kg.

With mine it's £5 a kilo or buy 4 kilos get one free for chicken.

The reason I raised the issue about water conten was that if you're looking for a specific weight (I assume that's how it's measured) of protein per meal then you need to watch the fillets. IIRC someone on here was commenting on a whole chicken that was only 85% chicken very recently.

My Oh likes to cook pork loins in gravy in the oven as they stay moist that way.

Yeah, its pretty bad what they get away with. I bought the Farmfoods chicken breasts, and they are FULL of water :P I buy proper chicken fillets with no water pumped in :)

I'd agree that you should buy a pack and see what you think but I find that there are plenty of pork shoulder joints around for good prices (around £3 per kg and £2.89 in Aldi). You can roast that and it's also fantastic cold and freezes beautifully. This is my favourite roasting recipe:
