Jobsearch ideas please

Is there anything else I should be doing as part of my jobsearch routine?

At the moment I check online, registered with 5 agencies, asked family and friends, sent out prospective letters, search local papers, but have run out ideas.

Anything else I should be doing?

Thanks

  • In which area do you want to search job. first decide in which field you want to go.

When your searching online, experiment with using different job titles, some HR depts like to get a bit too creative with job titles and they end up with nonsense job titles which can be missed using normal search terms.

If appropriate setup a linkedin profile, I receive a number of job leads via my profile.

I'd add some email alerts to jobsites such as CV Search and Indeed.

Then lots of jobs come to you, rather than your having to search for them

See if there's any voluntary work in your area you could be doing? Both in the area of the job you want and the job you'd love.
If you're asked, at an interview or whatever, "So what have you been doing recently?", it's good to be able to say you've been keeping in the rhythm of work. And it could also be a good networking opportunity.

National Careers Service at nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk will give you an online test and give you a report on what are your strong and weak areas. Its actual usefulness is debatable, but it might tell you things you don't know and it'll fill in an hour or so. And it'll help convince the DWP that you're serious about getting a job.

Keep on top of the agencies: check their websites for vacancies as often as possible and push yourself on every suitable vacancy.

Email alerts are a good idea: also, some sites like TotalJobs allow you to subscribe to job searches with an RSS feed. (So do some forums... ;) )
  • When you search on line, try NO key words, and just a distance from your postcode. Apply for EVERYthing within 20 miles, that you might with a little "on the job" training be able to do.

If there are contact details for the Recruitment Consultant, PHONE them, and explain that you have seen job X, and you wanted to find out more before applying.

Also, contact every friend you have, get them to give you 5 names each of people they know who have a job. Contact those 5, and explain you are looking for an entry level job, and who should they speak to.

When I change my CV, I get 10 or more RC's phoning me, within a week.

Also start to use linked in.

    Check trade/professional newspapers/magazines/websites.

Also keep an eye on Planning and Licensing Notices in local papers, especially if you are looking for restaurant or pub work, or for advance warning of a new supermarket etc.
