Mortgage - UK resident & expat advice

Hi,
Myself and a friend are hoping for a buy to let mortgage for a property priced at £200k or below, with a deposit of around £40k. The main complications are that although I'm UK resident my friend is a British expat living in Dubai, he has a stable job with a sizeable UAE based freighting company on good money, but has been previously told by an advisor that he wouldn't be able to get a mortgage due to having little UK financial footprint. He moved to Dubai in 2007 aged 19 with family.
Would he and myself be able to get a joint mortgage though?
I'm planning to visit some estate agents to discuss further, however wanted to know the general consensus on here.
Cheers

The lenders that might do this look for larger loan sizes.
