New Job pending references and CRB check

I have been verbally offered a job pending references and a CRB check. At my current job I am contracted to 1 weeks notice period. Obviously if I hand in my notice now I could be without work and therefore money for however many weeks my CRB takes. However if I don't hand in my notice now my employer will receive my reference request and will find out anyway. Knowing my boss as soon as I tell him I am leaving I will get sworn and shouted at and forced to hand in my notice straight away. Is there any way I can give over my contracted notice? Perhaps a verbal notice that my notice will be coming in due course? Or does he still have a right to force me to hand in my notice there and then?
Thanks

He cannot force you to hand in your notice. Do not give notice other than in writing: don't even hint at it.

He could decide to give you notice - one week, unless you have been there for two years or more right now. (Also longer notice from him if your written particulars say so, but as you say you have to give one week it is unlikely that he would have quoted more from the employer's side.)
  • If you've verbally been offered a job, I wouldn't rush to hand in my notice until I'd received the offer in writing. Have you said to the new company that you'd prefer to wait for the offer in writing before they contact your current company?
You could offer a longer notice period but if your boss is likely to react badly, it sounds as though it wouldn't be accepted.

  • Thanks for replies. I've only been here 6 months so he can make me drop it to a week. I asked the new company to hold off on references but unfortunately they can't formally offer me the job until they are back in. I think i'm in a bit of a catch 22 really.

If your boss is as bad as he sounds then I would be concerned about whether he would give me a reference at all.

Sorry to add to your worries!

  • To be honest he is rude and noisy but he's not nasty. We do actually get on quite well (I wonder what that says about me haha) I think he'll give me a reference. Well I hope so anyway.

If your current boss asks just tell him you are waiting to see exactly what they offer before making up your mind, imply that you are happy to stay if the new job terms aren't good enough.
