Just Placed My First Online Grocery Order

I've just placed my first online grocery order. It's a trial and I'm running with Asda.

Any tips on how to get the best out of household/grocery shopping online? I'm a single person and the miminum shop with Asda is £25.00 so I'll not have a massive shop to do each week, possibly once every two/three weeks

As always many thanks for any advice or tips.

Kevin

Online grocery shopping is really rather simple, you honestly don't need any help. Just browse through the categories, pick the stuff you want, choose a delivery slot, then get back to looking through Facebook and eBay.

I shop with Ocado & Tesco. The problem with Tesco is that it does not have good stock control, so in the time between placing your order and the picker gathering it items can go out of stock as non-online customers are shopping, hence lots of non-available items /substitutions. . With Ocado they have a dedicated warehouse and their stock control is accurate, I very seldom have any items missing, I keep a record and since the beginning of 2014 (when my records began) I have not had any non-available items. Ocado price match with Tesco as well, my shopping pass with them costs £6.99 per month for as many £40 deliveries as I want.

Tesco's mid-week pass is now £3 a month and the minimum shop is £25.

always use mysupermarket to compare prices.

have accounts at all the online stores that deliver in your area, if you move about a bit then they e-mail voucher codes if you haven't shopped with them in a while.

you can also get some good 1st times shopper discount codes if you look around, check cashback sites as well they will often give you cashback for 1st shop.

have you considered doing a monthly shop for basic/non perishables/freezeables? less delivery charges (sometimes free over a certain amount) and more likely to qualify for discounts. i do this and then just top up with fruit and veg weekly at the greengrocers each week.

i love online grocery shopping, never looked back!:j

I must admit I was rather pleased with the online shopping experience and I certainly will be using it on a regular basis. As someone who doesn't drive it certainly is a great way to have bulky and/or heavy goods delivered

I probably won't buy fresh fruit or meat this way as I like to see what I'm getting

That's good advice from xhosa9 about moving around, I'll certainly keep that in mind

Purely as a matter of interest Asda claim that my shop of £40.28p would have been £7.26p dearer at Tesco and £7.18p more expensive at Sainsburys. Figures taken from MySupermarket

I use Ocado and Sainsburys and I have to say I've never had any complaints about the fruit, veg or meat. It's always stuff I would have chosen myself. I know in the early days a lot of my friends had horror stories about the state of the fresh produce, but I think supermarkets are training staff a lot better these days.

Don't get me wrong the fruit I received from ASDA was in perfect condition; it's just that I want to pick a particular ripeness in fruit eg I like my bananas on the soft side, with some browning on the skin.

As regards meat it's down to thickness and looks. And all that is is personal preferences

Something to be aware of is that the offers you see when you are shopping online may not still be there on the day your order is actually delivered so it pays to check when these run out before you bulk buy.

I've been shopping with Asda online for about a year now and the only thing that annoys me is that sometimes the subs are not suitable eg: toothpaste substituted for mouthwash. But you can just hand them back to the delivery driver.

I still prefer going into the shops but working six day weeks and not driving has led me to the joys of online shopping. I have to say that I do wish Aldi was online though, purely for their fruit and veg!

Asda is pretty okay but not my favourite choice though if they substitute something it's usually okay. (But not make up!) They also have £1 delivery options which actually suit my routine. £1 delivery, no complaints! I also have to say I do love Asda fish - the one near me has never let even the smallest bone slip by them and the cajun crumb is lovely when you have one of those days where you don't want to make everything from scratch.

Tesco's is..well it is more expensive I feel. For me anyway. But they do offer a little bit more in choice - they have everything you can ever imagine and is especially good for authentic chinese/japanese/thai dishes as they have ingredients that other supermarkets may not stock. So sometimes I do fancy a Tesco shop to stock up on those hard to find items.

Sainsburys - never shopped here before, online or otherwise so I don't know about this. Anyone had any Sainsburys experiences?

Morrisons - now, I am/was a huge Morrisons fan when I used to do the big shop instore with my ex. Their fish counter isn't always the best (few too many bones) but that can of course depend on area. I am glad they have finally decided to do online shopping though I haven't actually got round to having a shop from there since I lived alone. I think I may have to try it next week. I think what originally put me off was their minimum spend but to be honest, I spend that anyway!

I find with online shopping a list definitely helps and meal plans to ensure you get everything. Then re-review your basket before you pay for it to see if there is anything you impulsively bought and now think, hmm, maybe not?

    That's what I do anyway :)
