interview question - how to calm a upset child

I think it is so, so sad if you are not allowed to give an upset child a cuddle.
The reassurance afforded by a hug or arm around the shoulder is pretty basic human stuff. It tells a child that you acknowledge their upset and that you want to help. Bare words alone aren't enough.
However, if the upset isn't too great, have you thought of devising some strategies for making them laugh, or at least smile? Humour is a great defuser, and the minute the child starts to smile, endorphins are released and the stress reduces.(I just lurve spiders!)
