I am also being persued by DWP and their credit companies for a debt of £70 from the year 2000. I have written to them asking for proof which I have never received. I have also advised them the debt is statute barred which they have acknowledged and agreed but still continue to harass me with TWO different companies - the last one stating they are sending someone round to my house - I look forward to this!! I am now persuing the matter through the parliamentary ombudsmen. !!!!!! is wrong with these people - causing someone so much stress and trouble over £70 when there are illegal foreigners fleecing our benefit system and people claiming benefits that aren't entitled to them! I have also been advised if they send debt collectors round they do NOT have the power to take payment nor my belongings. The only way they can recover this money is if I were to become unemployed and claimed benefits - they cannot make a deduction of earnings without getting a court order.

As already stated, DWP can get a Direct Earnings Attachment.

That DOES NOT require a court order for them to do.

Does it require proof of the debt Fermi? Or is it just DWP say so?

  • Hi,

Very similar story to most people on this thread. I've come home from work today to find a letter from "CCS Collect" saying that they "have been instructed by the Department for Works and Pensions to collect an outstanding amount of £518.46 and to pay within 7 days otherwise they will have no alternative but to advise the DWP to litigate to recover the amount due together with court costs and legal fees".

This letter has come out of the blue and there has been no previous correspondence from the DWP about this whatsoever.

I rang CCS Collect this evening who informed me that the debt relates to a Jobseekers Allowance Payment in 1999 and a Budget Loan in 2001, neither of which I have any recollection or knowledge of, especially after 15 years.

CCS Collect advised me to speak to DWP for more details about this but didn't give me their details though they did say they would put a note on the file to stop any action for the next 14 days.

My next move was to right to the DWP asking for details of these alleged debts; if only I knew where to write to them at and the correct department or team to address the letter to.

Can anyone who has had to do the same thing in trying to contact the DWP offer any advice as where to write to please?

    Thanks in advance.
