  • Admittedly, the TV part is the highest part of the bill but I'm in a contract now so tied for a while. What are the alternatives? I've had Sky so long I'm quite behind on what else is out there.
  • The alternatives are:-

Cancel the Sky contract, but leave the box connected, giving you just the Freeview part to watch.

    Get a Freeview box.

    Get a Freesat box.

Stop watching/recoding live TV, watching instead online "Catch Up", which would mean you could also save the £12-12pm you pay for the TV Licence.

I didn't know that, so you mean if I cancel Sky the Freeview would be on there without having to connect anything?
Sorry, I know I sound green!
  • Yes.

Without the subscription, the Sky box acts as a kind of Freeview box.

IIRC, it's known as "Freesat from Sky".

I had it, for a few months, when I moved in here.

Yes I have the free stations through Sky dish too - but you don't get any Sky channels - but who cares.

Son paid for Sky but when he moved out I didn't want to pay so he cancelled - but I found I have loads of channels anyway - so did not need to get a set tiop box at all. All the ITV/BBC/CHANNEL 4/SHOPPING etc - plus quite a few kids ones.

You all seem to be sounding the virtues of Freeview, but where we live reception on Freeview is terrible in most weather conditions, even with the correct Ariel, and booster, if its high pressure, no picture, foggy, no picture, rain, no picture, pigeon on Arial, no picture lol, mind you we are stuck 5 miles out into the north sea !!

  • The terrible reception wouldn't be an issue for you sourcrates, if you were receiving through a satellite dish.

Yes it is. I only get reception in the winter months.this, probably trees. But hubby has a set top box in living room and often can only pick up certain channels.
So much for digital being better.

  • We cope fine with a Freesat box (bit of an initial investment but much cheaper in the long run -paid for itself within a year). We are in a remote location (there's no cable or Virgin availability here, and forget digital radio - sold that on eBay as useless here) but the TV reception is fine throught the dish and Freesat box.

Well done for making such a positive start.
  • Tomorrow I'm switching my bank a/c to First Direct (From smile, i.e. co-op) so that'll be £100 extra in my account next month. All this negative publicity has me spooked and the fact the Co-Op is affiliated to the Labour Party has also troubled me for a while (I'm on the other side of the politic spectrum)

I'm also going to cancel/Cut back on Virgin Media. My bill's gone up from £51 to £68 since December and so I should probably get rid. I can't believe it was £43.90 when I first signed up in December 2011. It's all a load of bollox anyway! just need to convince Mrs Sam_In_Leeds that she can do without Animal Planet HD + 1 etc and all the other crap
I spent 90% of my money on women, drink and fast cars. The rest I wasted. ...
