    I've been Money Tipped!
Rather than give a decimal figure like 4.7 ( most logical to me ), each level is split into thirds and a letter is used: the bottom third being a c and the top third being an a ( sort of logical...One thinks of a as a better grade than c)
    So it goes 3c, 3b,3a, 4c,4b,4a,5c,5b,5a...etc

A logical person has no place in the world of literacy!:rotfl:

Decimals are not really practical. Basically there are a, b, c paragraphs which are the level descriptors. You look at a piece of childs writing and look at the elements contained in that writing with the level descriptors. If they've got some of level 4a and more of level 4b (quite typical) then they get a 4b. Some of the 4a criteria don't follow on from the 4b criteria. Lots of moderation goes on with teachers to ensure that there is consistent interpretation of the descriptors.

Had to talk to a few parents about this in Key Stage 1-they thought that because their child had written 2 pages in neat handwriting, the class teacher was wrong and their grade should be higher. actually the writing was poor quality, no descriptions, storyline, colourful use of language etc. These parents found it hard to believe that a well constructed paragraph with bad handwriting was far better than the immaculate script with no content.

Well DD1's school (year 9) hasn't even had them back yet. (Phoned this this morning). They can view the results online but they look odd so are refusing to give out any scores until they can check the originals.

Great lesson for the kids. Word hard and your effort will be rewarded with a big fat nothing.

I see. Decimalisation would work nicely for Maths and Science though.A simple conversion from a mark. Blooming literacy causing a spanner in the works.lol

we are exactly the same. my DD was due her year 9 sats results today but she text me about an hour ago to say they 'might' get them on monday.

I really do feel for the kids they are put under so much pressure over these sats and then when it comes down to it, they cant even get the results back on time, and if im honest even when she gets them im going to be wondering if the results are going to be accurate??

well my daughter has come home and said that one of the teachers told them they have had the results but they look 'strange' as some of the people who they predicated would get the highest marks have the lowest etc , so they had asked for them to be reviewed - and they 'may' get them back before they break up on wednesday - I wont be holding my breath!

What an absolute joke !!!

on a positive note my daughter was awarded student of the year from her form group so I am very proud mum today - as I am every day !! :j
