Friday 18th April - What small DFW things will you do today?

When we start out on the Debt-Free Wannabe trail we do loads of big "stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the Gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free...

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending.

  • Good afternoon all.

Firstly, after reading another post on this thread it occurred to me that I never asked if it was OK to join in - sorry if that was a bit presumptious :(

However, reading and posting here is really helping me to keep on track, feel I'm not alone and also try new things. So a big thank you to all :)

This morning I entered some competitions (for free toiletries, £100 grocery voucher and a holiday). I imagine the chances of winning are quite slim but you never know....

Otherwise I have been cleaning, which strictly speaking isn't really a DFW thing but then again I did use to pay someone to do it (in a past life). The urge does not take me that often (it must be a blue moon or something) so I have to take advantage while it does. I have done half of the living room (properly moving furniture and taking books off shelves etc) and better finish it quick before the mood turns back to my usual "it's only dust" frame of mind. I've even put the cushion covers in the wash (foxgloves post the other day made me ponder how long it's been since I did those!).

I am also primed ready to post some things on eBay - nearly did it yesterday but had an inkling that it might be a free listing weekend and it is:T

Have walked the dogs, eaten leftovers from last night and will have a quick cuppa before getting back to the dusting (am using brush attachment of vacuum cleaner because there's quite a lot of it) then finishing off with "Mr Shiny" so it smells good.

Am also going to try for a spend free weekend (4 whole days!).

Best wishes for the rest of the day.

you are more than welcome to join us, the more the merrier - its a bit quiet on here at the min as we have people on exotic hols, others moving house and sometimes life does just get in the way of posting - but a very big WELCOME from me.

And a very big HELLO and I'm BACK!! from me :)

We had a fantastic holiday and for the very first time ever, I had carefully costed most things beforehand, bought a Euro pre-paid cashcard for that amount (was rescued a bit by being given some unexpected euros as early bday present / instead of egg etc), and came home having only spent an extra E36 - airport grub and last min gifts. So, nothing extra added to the CC or other bills looming from the trip - its feels great! We were relatively careful on our trip and took lots of little steps to reduce expenditure - except we did eat out a lot, as the friend we were sharing the trip with is a real foodie and there were lots of things to try at very reasonable prices.

My DFW stuff this weekend is both very big and very small!

I am sporting a shaved down signature as I have slain 3/4 (both in number of cards and % of total debt at its September peak) of my credit card debt now! It felt fantastic making those final payments, just got to stay on the tight budget until the formal debt is all slain - I think another 4 months or so. Then its onto the family loan.

So to keep me on course I have two lots of guests coming this weekend, and then another set coming in whilst I am away on a training course next week. So my DFW jobs are all to do with enabling this to happen!

    • [STRIKE]Clear lounge of last of the holiday unpacking,[/STRIKE] and clean it thoroughly through.
    • Ironing. Urk. First batch: 2 double sets 2 single sets
    • Second batch: 2 double sets
    • [STRIKE]Clear the rest of the ironing and out away when I can get into the room between guests[/STRIKE]
    • Make bread
    • [STRIKE]Clear out understairs area to stash clean laundry in[/STRIKE]
    • [STRIKE]Show cleaning lady around (I have a cleaner!! But only because I'm away when the changeover needs to happen!)[/STRIKE]
[STRIKE]Empty DD's prize possessions and deep clean her room
    [/STRIKE]
    • Clean kitchen, tidy cupboards so no towers of plastic boxes to crush guests
    • Finish writing up folder for guests
    • Pack for training course, including laundry tablets as there is a washing machine on site!
    • Go to work - put in form for training opportunity and find paperwork for this course
    • Pre-reads!
    • At last moment - clean bathroom, bedroom, stairs[STRIKE]
    • Order bday gift from amazon using swagbucks giftcard .
    • Do new budget and work out what I can up my last CC DD to next month
    [/STRIKE]
    • Put some items on ebay
    • adpoints
    • [STRIKE]freepostcodelottery[/STRIKE]
I think that is enough for the next 36 hours!! I have missed you all but I hope you are healing ziggy, and everyone else is holding together too, health and wealth wise.

A new whisk, as I killed my other one.
Any gardening stuff as we now have a lottie

And (trying not to be too greedy)

Tshirts, we all need them so will be keeping my peepers open

    PiC x
  • Good afternoon all - it makes me feel exhausted just reading some of your lists!

Managed to post lots of small things on eBay yesterday (boy it was slow going though - just keeps hanging - probably our old laptop) so am keeping an eye on those and hope to list two bigger things later today (need to clean and photograph them and research to decide on pricing).

Now the living room is clean I decided I'd better do the dining room too - it's actually been turned into an eBay command centre recently. There is "stuff" everywhere and we haven't been able to eat at the table for ages. I've managed to pack all the stuff into a corner so at least we can use the table. OH cleared off his DVD shelves (he has hundreds of them ) and gave me a bag of them for selling :)

Made sausage and onion baguettes for all for lunch today (got the baguette for 9p when I went to get Easter things on Thursday and it crisped up nicely in the oven). Not going to make the no spend day today - have run out of milk and OH tells me his beer supply is running worryingly low for a BH weekend....Seeing as he's been working really hard in the garden and has not complained about my lentil and veggie curry being our main meal for at least two evenings this weekend (was actually quite complimentary) I might let him get a box of beer.

Otherwise we are just chilling at home as saw all family last weekend at the wedding. Am hoping to get to a car boot sale one day soon - not to buy but to research what people are selling and how much for etc. Haven't been to one for years and it may be a better method of selling some stuff. Just need to find one that isn't too far away.

Enjoy the rest of the day!
  • Tonight I'm going to walk in to town to a gig instead of driving and gifting Leeds City Council £5 for the pleasure of leaving my car unoccupied in the multi-storey. I'm going on my bill so doubt I'll drink anything when I get there anyway.

Went a bit mental yesterday and drove to Yorkshire Dales for a stunning walk in the sunshine. I spent £2.20 on a coffee and £5.50 for breakfast and then £3 to park my car so needs to trim back tonight!

    (Altho technically I'm now no longer a DFW - £1000 savings/£525 0% credit card!)
I spent 90% of my money on women, drink and fast cars. The rest I wasted. ...
