Claiming Comp for Mis-sold endowment policy

I'm helping my parents with a complaint against HSBC regarding the mis-selling of two endowment policies. We've just heard back from them and they have upheld our complaint and offered us a sum of money as redress.
I've reread the letter several times to try and understand how they've come about their compensation figure, but I can't understand all the financial jargon.
Without wishing to sound greedy, how do I know if the offer from the bank is a generous one or not? Because I'm acting on behalf of my parents, I'm feeling the weight of responsibility and want to get the most amount of money back from the bank as possible if they are entitled to it.
