Hubby bought a lightweight waterproof jacket from Sportworld last weekend, and got a smaller one for one of the children. Probably better going into Sportworld and having a good look.

Try your local cycle shop, they usually have lightweight 'proofs' that roll up small for carrying, you might even get them in Halfords if there is one close by.

I was in a similar situation looking for some fishing trousers so I bought a new unissued pair of army trousers off ebay ( £5 ) and a can of W5 fabric waterproofing spray from Lidl ( £1.99 ) and gave the trousers a couple of coats of the spray , now the water rolls off and I stay dry and as they are cotton they are breathable too.

Not too sure how long the spray lasts though as I haven't been fishing in them yet but I used to do the same with an old coat and fabsil spray and as long as it didn't get too dirty I was able to leave it in the shed and wear it a few times before it needed washing.

I got some for myself and the children in the coffee shop Tchibo. They only have them at certain times, but worth a look if you have one nearby as they were very reasonable.

Try searching for "Regatta Packaway" to find a neat jack and over-trousers, sold separately, each in it's own drawstring bag. We bought our sets in 2005 and they're still going strong.

We take our sets with us all the time - mine have even been used in the foulest weather at Cairngorm. Breathable, light, cheap - they're ideal! Here are some examples:
