A Easter hunt to keep you busy

Requirements

1,One box of 80 Sainsburys basics teabags, you will have to have these at home as they are now discontinued.

2,One wrapped pack of 40 Sainburys teabags 20p.

3,One pair of digital scales.

Take random samples of both types of teabags, my scales are saying 4g old square bags, 2g new round bags. Please post your findings.

I changed from M and S extra strong to these, and now they have messed them up.I know there are many followers of these teabags, and yes I know they are cheap, but that is not the point,we see this time and time again,up the price, lower the quality/weight. Do they think we are stupid?

So rally to the Easter cause. Hunt, research, and demand our old bags back, you know you didnt really want to go hunting for choclolate this weekend!:j

At the price they were selling them for I really couldn't see how Sainsbury's could make any money out of them so I'm not surprised that they've changed the format and effectively increased the price. Of course it could also be that their suppliers are no longer prepared to be paid a pittance for their product.

I'll give the new ones a try and if I'm not keen on them I'll move on to another supermarkets' offerings like Aldi for instance.

I certainly won't resort to weighing out the contents of a teabag costing less than 1p like some deranged scientist.

Why yes of course the point is this is happening to all foodstuff, and no I am not deranged scientist, but I have had research published in the BMJ, if that counts.

Who cares? They make enough money on other products, I cannot have sympathy of they under-price basic products to entice people into supermarkets.

The chances are that Sainsbos did make a nice profit on these by paying less at source. Does any increased income gets passed onto to the supplier?

It IS typical, isn't it?! Thought they were too good to be true. Am a bit cheesed off as I'm nearly out and was about to get a load more in.

I'll just try the one box and see what I think but the main appeal (besides the price which is still cheap) was how strong they were.

If they are dishwater strength like so much other cheap tea, I'll go back to buying the Red Label ones in Aldi or Lidl. I've had both before and they are both great and cheap at £2 for 160 bags. Not Sains Basics cheap but worth paying the extra for and still much cheaper than most other tea bags.

Well that doesn't matter as you are not Sainsbury's accountant.

Supermarkets don't bother too much about how much profit they make on individual products, they look at the whole picture, total profit.

They know many people who come in for cheap tea bags will go on to buy milk, sugar, biscuits etc.

so you weighed the teabags and not just the contents?

if you just weighed the bag ever thought it could be to with the paper thickness? the square bags had a huge edge of paper round them. which I doubt the round ones do?

the only way to know for sure is to make a cup of tea and see if you like it? no idea why you would weigh tea bags.

Yep, they must have been great loss leaders for sainsburys, I certainly only ever go (went) there for these t bags and sometimes clothes in the sale, would probably get some 'bits' while I'm there. Oh well, no need to visit now I guess, especially now the price has risen per bag, I can source better quality for less money now.
  • Just did a taste test - not even close enough, tasted very weak and watery. So looks like different supplier altogether.
Price label had sticker attached boasting about reduced packaging - since when replacing cardboard box with unrecyclable, non biodegradable thick plastic is better for anyone?
