45p for 1.5kg flour, can I make half decent bread with this?

Options
I noticed today Asda sell 1.5kg of Flour for 45p.

If I were to buy a cheap bread machine, could I make a half decent loaf with this?

If I understand correctly I could make 2 750g loaves for £0.225p each (plus maybe upto 10p for other ingredients)?

Why do people buy "Bread Flour" - I read I can just add some gluten something or other to an all-purpose flour.

I believe the strong flour recommended for making bread has more gluten in it.

I always use Mr T's 45p value flour in my breadmaker, and I doubt anyone but a real connoisseur would tell the difference!

I use cheap tesco's strong white bread flour (1.5kg, cheapest they got) and it makes a wonderful loaf (although I also add brown flour because I my dough doesn't hold it's shape if I don't, and I've vowed never to make another pure white loaf after the last disaster). I love it. Tastes lush. Cheap is chearful and looks after the wallet.

I don't have a breadmaker. I make my bread in my kitchen aid

Don't buy a new bread machine - it's a typical thing people buy and then never use. I bet if you asked at work, or family or freecycle, someone would have one they'd happily offload.

Oh Contrair! We bought ours at Chistmas and haven't bought a loaf since. It is one of the best things we have ever bought and can't recommend them highly enough. Our's is a Panasonic BTW.

Why would anyone not want to buy a breadmaker ?
Get a good one and it wont end up at the back of the kitchen cupboard.
I think my Panny is the best thing since sliced bread.

I used to use a breadmaker until OH was off sick and bored... he now makes all of our bread and it's amazing! We have used various brands of bread flour and success, for him, appears to come down to the yeast rather than the brand/price of the flour.

I love my breadmaker. You can use normal plain flour if you use the water from the potatoes when you have boiled them, for some reason it works brilliantly.

I use Aldi bread flour and I add a cup full of wheatgerm for the added health benefit. It makes 3 really nice loaves for very little money.

I'm using t*sco everyday value flour in my breadmaker at the moment, but it's the self raising as we don't have any normal flour in, I added yeast to it, hope it doesn't turn out too bad :s

So my bread turned out to be the best loaf I've (well the breadmaker) made yet. Don't know if it was because it was white bread instead of the usual brown, or if it was the extra rising agent in the SR flour, but it was all nice and risen and smooth instead of a funny shape on top like it usually is. I will be using the t*sco cheap flour from now on :D
