Car Insurance 3rd Party or Full Comp

Hi , I am currently on a DMP plan and my car insurance is due this month !!

Question is my car is only worth about £1500 if that, I have always had fully comp but now times are hard I am really wondering if its really worth having based on the value and age (x red) of the car. I would be looking at saving approx £70 a year by going 3rd Party Fire and Theft.

Any views would be appreciated, I know it doesnt sound much £70 but at the moment to me that is quite a few quid extra I would be paying out each month.

Thanks !!!

    Tricky one.

I think you need to ask at what point in the possible repair costs would the insurance company just write the car off?

How often have you ever needed to use the fully comp bit of the policy?

If you lost your car completely, what sort of price car would you be likely to replace it with?

But then again, I have always driven cars that are worth approx £500 and always had 3rd party fire and theft ;)

I had the same dilemma recently, except the difference in my case was only £35 between the two of them! My car is worth about the same as yours too.

In the end I stayed with fully comp as I often end up driving my son-in-law's car and my Dad's car too on the odd occasion and being fully comp means I can do this easily [driving theirs 3rd party] but I wouldn't be able to do this if I was only 3rd party myself.

Unfortunately if my car was written off I would be pretty stuffed either way.

In the end I stayed with fully comp for convenience but you might not need to do this and you could save yourself £70.

I have third party insurance and am still insured to drive other cars third party

I had this dilemma recently too, had car ins (FC) with one company who wanted to renew at £459:eek: . Went 3rd Party with another company (my car's also only worth approx £1500) and got insurance for £205:D

Hi I had this same issue when i renewed this year. money was tight for me last year and I went 3rd party but i hated it so this year i did stump up the extra it wasn't that much and protected my no claims as i have 5years +. I think in your shoes i would make sure I had the best price and tried to go via quidco to get some cash back which will help.

I always say to customers when asked this question - how much do you rely on your car? If you had a fault accident and your car needed repairs/or got written off, would you have the money to replace it or get it repaired?

Comp cover also gives windscreen cover (with an excess tho  )

It's all down to whether you could afford to replace it if the worst should happen. Is that the cheapest quote?

Whatever you do go through Quidco when youve found out which insurance agent is the cheapest. You can easily get £100 cashback.
