Tax Rebate Question

Options
Hi,

I have been working with my current company for 2 years, last year I wasn't given a rebate via my wages, instead a cheque turned up in October and I wasn't even aware I had over paid tax.

This year I have earned pretty much the same as last year and have been paying tax every month, will I get a rebate in my wages or will I have to contact the tax office to get any money owing?

Thanks in advance

There appears to be no hard and fast rule with regards to tax rebates - they have two options (depending on the amount / how they feel / the weather / whether they had breakfast this morning etc etc

    a) Send you a cheque
    b) Adding to your taxable allowance for next year

I prefer a) - Why should they get the use of "our" money for a few months interest free - so I suggest that you give them a ring and ask ....

I thought they paid you interest on money they owe you?
    Am I wrong?

If you have your final payslip for the tax year you should be able to check if you have paid the correct amount of tax by looking at your gross pay, tax paid and tax code.
If PAYE and on the correct tax code you are likely to have paid the correct amount of tax

Without knowing details of your circumstances, it is impossible to say. However, I would guess that you got a rebate for the first year because you changed jobs midyear and were on a Week 1 Month 1 tax code at the new job. Since you've been at your current job for two years, you were there for the whole 13/14 tax year so, assuming there was no change and you were on the correct tax code, you will have paid the correct tax and will not be receiving any rebate for that year. However, as I said, impossible for any of us to say for sure without knowing more details about your circumstances and tax affairs. If in doubt, phone the tax office and ask, although they probably haven't received your P60 from your current employer yet and will have to wait for that.
