Companies regularly hive off or shut down parts of their company to either move their interest more firmly into another area of business or just to concentrate in a smaller area for example.

If that area of the business is making a profit then there's an opportunity for you to make money. Set up your own business and buy the contracts, try to get a job with a rival using your knowledge of this profit making sector. Be creative.

All the contracts are awarded to approved contractors, it would not be possible to start up as a new company and be recognised and approved so soon

How do you know how profitbale a certain part of the company is? are you the financial manager?

No I am not the financial manager, I am the partner of one of the employees involved who knows that part of the business is turning a profit. Thank you

What reason, if any, has your employer given for wanting to withdraw from this profitable area of business?

The reason is simply they do not want to do what they class as "commercial contracts" anymore

Not sure what you mean, you have rights to redundancy pay etc

Simply the old fashioned right to a bit of respect.. after years of working dutifully for the company ....the way this whole thing has been handled is actually disgusting and my partner for one has been under stress to the point that I am very proud he has continued going into work not knowing what every day will bring

I'm confused. Why would someone prefer constructive dismissal (and all the associated aggravation) to redundancy? Am I missing something?

my partners boss questioned if it was constructive dismissal....and was going to fight, but apparently is not going to any longer he is resigned to loosing his job and is no longer fighting to keep the jobs afloat

With all due respect your partner doesn't know everything that is going on behind the scenes!!

Again I repeat they will not be privy to everything that goes on behind the scenes and this also includes your partner and his boss,
