Money Moral Dilemma: Should I sell student discount laptops?

No dilemma at all here. Carry on as you are!'Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.' George Carlin0

You're a cheat. No it's not OK to do that, you're abusing your privilege. Stop it now.0

Total fine to do, i've heard of way more unethical ways for students to make money.
Problem is are you really making a little bit? Ebay fees at 10% plus postage and paypal at 3.4 you aren't making anything and have the risk of customers not being happy.0 -
Surely the buyer can't use the laptop legally? All the licences will be for student use.
Whatever, this is just wrong. The discount is for the original buyer to use as a student. It's not for making a quick buck. Had it been merely a special offer open to all, I'd say good luck.0 -
As long as the warranty can be passed onto someone else legally then I think it's fine and well done you.
As you're a student and this current unelected government are now making students indebted, probably for the rest of their lives, do this and whatever else you can to get some money back as you're having to pay for your education that the scum that are now ruling over us got for free.
As for paying tax, why should you. Cameron's father and grand father didn't pay any tax - so until this corrupt so and so pays up, don't pay.0 -
If the company find out they might stop student discounts so other students will loose out, I doubt the warranties are worth anything, surely they will be in your name and the person using them will need a receipt from the company to prove the warranties are valid.0

I don't know the trading terms on eBay , but if what Kernow666 (bless 'ee me 'ansum) says is right then I calculate that even if you found a mug to buy it for the FULL retail price you might just be making 1.8% profit ! That's £18 per £1,000 !
I find it hard to imagine someone a) supposedly intelligent enough to be deemed a student and b) with that much cash behind them , scurrying between their local computer shop and their post office for this kind of margin - this is just not real .
Come on now - own up - is this just another 'makie-up' moral dilemma or is there someone really so mean and/or so stupid ? How much do you 'gross' per month ?0 -
I agree with most posters - i.e be sure to check for things like warranty status & tax owed, otherwise things could get tricky later on.
Morally, what you're doing seems to me to be in the best entrepreneurial spirit so more power to you!
Business is all about making money, a lot of it is WAY more "unethical" in my opinion than anything mentioned here so those who have jumped up on their high horses could do with a reality check!0 -
The laptops for students scheme was intended to provide one laptop for each student to use for their own studies and so to say, like others have said on this thread, that it is an example of 'market forces' to buy in multiples and sell the laptops on is inaccurate. It is a skewing of market forces and cheats the taxpayer. I bought my laptop by shopping around and getting the cheapest I could because I could not afford, out of taxed money, to buy the one I really wanted. In contrast, two people close to me were given free Apple Macs (over £1000 each!) through the educational subsidy. Neither of them needed this top of the range luxury and both could have afforded to pay for them themselves had they so chosen.
If the rules allow you to take advantage of this loophole, so be it. But realise that people like myself are very angry that something which was (misguidedly in my view) set up to help the disadvantaged is being used to disadvantage the taxpayer instead.0 -
I think that's a great way of making extra money I would do it!!!
There may come a time though when you may be questioned as to why you have purchased 100 laptops in one year :-)
So my advice is do it with discretion!0
