Hayfever medicine that actually works?

Aaargh! have now reached the point where I want to gouge out my eyes as they are so itchy. Can't do it though as I'm too busy wiping my runny nose. I'm taking an over the counter hayfever tablet every day but it doesn't seem to be doing much good. Is it worth trying a different tablet or increasing the dose?

My doctor has always suggested hitting hay fever from all sides with tablets, a nasal spray and eye drops. How long have you been taking the tablets? I think you are supposed to start taking the tablets before the season starts. I started taking them a few weeks ago because I find that does help.0

Thanks Hermia, I've been taking them for just over a week and in previous years they have kept the hayfever under control pretty much as soon as I started taking them. I get whichever tablets are cheapest so I've used all sorts of different ones in the past. Are we having an unusually high pollen count this year?0 -
Try this, it changed my life!

I'd taken anti-histamine and steroids every spring to autumn since the age of 16 until I tried light therapy - it was nothing short of miraculous for me. My brother has also had great results.
Yes you feel a right charlie with the prongs up your hooter, but it's not painful, only takes a few minutes every day. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0 -

Thank you. I'm so desperate I don't care how much of a charlie I look but am a bit sceptical about how effective it could be and wouldn't want to spend £39.99 but for £10 I'd give it a go! HOWEVER it is out of stockOff to do a websearch to see if anyone else stocks it at the lower price now

Have you tried local honey - some people report that it helps.0

This early in the pollen season, I doubt it's grass pollen bothering you............it's more likely to be tree pollen.
Some tips for hay fever sufferers I've read are:
Wash your hair before bedtime, to rinse the pollen away.
Wear wraparound sunglasses when outdoors, to keep pollen out of your eyes.
Smear Vaseline around your nostrils, to trap pollen grains and prevent them going further up your nose.
Keep your bedroom window closed, to prevent pollen blowing into your bedroom.
Definitely see your GP because he/she can prescribe more effective nasal sprays and antihistamine tablets.
You have my sympathy, as a fellow sufferer I know the misery this causes.
My hay fever symptoms are under control, thanks to immunotherapy treatment at the hospital. It has made a major impact on my health and wellbeing.
I hope you feel better soon.

I tried one of these and it really helped, need to dig it back out again and do some 'top up' sessions. I saw them in asda yesterday for £20 so it is definitely worth looking around for one.
Hope it helps you x0 -
Thanks all for your helpful advice, I'm grateful
I've tried honey in the past but it didn't seem to work for me (although a friend swears by it). Boots sell a mechanical nose-prongy-thingy for £15 so I'll be nipping in tomorrow to get one to try and maybe some eyedrops too.0 -
I use to suffer badly from hayfever but it seems to get milder each year. I find of all the tablets I've taken, benadryl (acrivastine) is the best but it is very pricey though, mind. About £6.50 for 24 tablets, required to take about 2-3 a day.0

I liked to listen to Michael Van Straten on the radio. He talked about hayfever and other subjects. (Nasaleze is recommended by him)0
