bank account for those who have had debt?

hopefully some kind person could point me in the right direction please.
my brother was in debt for almost 30k, i've painstakenly helped him clear his debts over the past 10 years or so, he also has a previous ccj.
he has had a bank account with the A & L (easysaver), so he cant go overdrawn on this a/c)
the only problem that he's having is that his paycheque is taking too long to clear (10days), and my brother (who's on the autistic spectrum). cant wait that long for his money despite me trying to get him into a routine to change his habits and save a bit for that wait.

is there any bank account that will take 3 days to clear that he can get access to, without of course him being allowed to go overdrawn? at the moment he is visiting cash converters weekly at a cost of £25.00 p/w.

Who does his employer bank with (should say on the cheque)? If he opened an account with the same bank the cheque should clear quicker.

    Hi,

I've got an account with Natwest called the step account, I'm not sure how long cheques take to clear but you can't get an overdraft or cheque book on it.

EDIT Also, if he's having problems opening an account because of previous debt problems, Nationwide do an account that does not require a credit check. You have to apply in the branch for that though, and request for the non-credit check account otherwise they'll try and open a normal current account for you. There are others but I can't remember them at the moment. I'll have a think

Natwest is a clearing bank so cheques should take about 3 working days not sure if a cheque from one of there other branches would clear on the same day - it is the case with Lloyds.

I got an account with Cahoot not sure how I passed that credit check - even though you post cheques to them mine clear and enter the account within a week.

The main banks Lloyds, Natwest and I believe Barclays should all clear cheques within the 3 working days the problem comes when you bank with banks that used to be building socieities they are not traditonal "clearing" banks so take longer from 5 to 10 days.

Why does he get paid by cheque can't he ask to be paid directly into his account?
  • Why dont you set him up a savings account with a cash card. IIRC abbey have a flexi saver account with a book and a card. It will allow his wages to get paid into.

He will be able to get his cash out of a link machine i.e. any. 0% chance he could go O/D in a savings account. He'll be able to use the branch counter too.

Just dont tell Abbey its for his wages as they wont let you set it up.

How long ago was the CCJ registered? It it settled?

Or if you want to go for a decent account with debit card etc that appears to be lenient with who it allows to join, try CitiBank's current account. I got accepted despite having loads of defaults and being a registered insolvant!
