I do some freelance writing work but my laptop is starting to have quite a few problems. Could I buy a new laptop and claim this as an expense since it is my main and only tool of work?

Absolutely - claim as capital allowances - 100% write-off in one year. If there is a private element, estimate as a percentage and deduct from the claim. There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who do not. :doh:0
