Surprise from solicitors!

Options
We bought or house in May 2005 but had an 8 week gap between selling our flat and buying our house. We had got 90% of the way through buying another property and it all fell through so we got out of the flat before we lost our purchaser. The solicitors were a nightmare and were actually dropped by the estate agent who used them not long after we completed but we had chosen to stay with them as they were a no sale no fee offer.

Yesterday I had a letter through the post saying

Mr and Mrs ...
Refund

Please find a cheque enclosed for £164.00 being a refund of monies not required regarding your recent purchase of ....... Road.

Please do not trouble to acknowledge safe receipt.

Best wishes

Now being me I paid it in to bank and transferred it straight over to mortgage company.
DH said I should phone them and make sure it was for us and not someone else who has just bought in our road.

I'm wondering what this money could be as everything tallied on the final bill we got.
We did have a £50000 deposit which they held for quite some time (I don't remeber how long, just that I was getting narked by them dragging their feet whilst holding our money which wasn't earning us interest).

Does this sound like they are repaying interest earned? IIRC I don't think that they are supposed to earn money on deposits held.
I have a feeling that it is what we earned in a month when we had the deposit in our own high interest account.

My main issue is how long they have taken to refund our money. 2 years and about 9 weeks!!!!

Didn't they enclose a financial statement from the original calculation and one showing how the refund was calculated?

I had something similar recently (and was looking forward to adding it to the mortgage overpayments kitty... then my laptop died and I had to spend it )

No nothing to do with the original purchase but then all the paperwork we had originally didn't state any extra money- heck I wouldn't have let em hang onto it for 2 years!
