Anyone made their own fondant icing?

Options
Ds birthday coming up and I've designed an awesome Sonic the Hedgehog cake for him.BUT I want to make my own fondant icing as the bought stuff will end up costing £20ish (apparently, going by cake size icing charts) and that's before the flowerpaste, food colouring and cake ingredients (not to mention all the other party bits!)

So,has anybody made their own,is it worth it and is it a pain?

I'm considering going down the white chocolate fondant route as it tastes great with my white choc bitterness and strawberry jam sponge cake! But so have no idea if it's truely worth it or how the results will turn out!
If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?

I've never made it, wouldn't know where to start but if someone else has I too would be interested in knowing!!

Mind you, I know icing is expensive but have you checked out the cheap stores like home bargains or B and M bargains? I got a huge pack there the other week and it was about a quid

Bought a 12 in circle which worked well for my Christmas cake, cant remember what I paid for it, but think it was around €6/7. Problem from your point of view was that I bought it in Dunnes Stores, an Irish chain, which I dont think you have in UK. Was made by Dr Oetker, so you might google for stockists. Good luck....I would be far too messy and lazy to attempt making my own!

Hmm I have & it took hours. It's temperamental & didn't like my warm hands. You cannot roll and re roll more than twice really as it starts to get a bit thin & shiny.

I would take the advice of pp & take a trip to home bargains or B&M whichever you have. I make loads of cakes and some of my best ones have been 'cheated' with ready rolled fondant lol ;)

I have made it, but I'm not sure I would again. I used the marshmallow method. Very messy.

Be warned, navy blue is the worst icing colour. It takes LOADS of colour gel to get a deep enough colour and everybody's poo ends up blue for a few days afterwards!!

I've not made fondant, but I have made marshmallow fondant (MMF) which is scrummy, makes a lot and is easier to colour as you add the colour paste when it's runny. If you Google MMF or marshmallow fondant you will get the recipes, and use the little marshmallows from Tesco (all baking currently on 3-for-2).

If you decide to use pre-coloured regular fondant, look online, on Amazon or in your nearest cake decorating supplies shop for colours and best prices. Your nearest shop will generally be a good source of advice too.

Re buying flowerpaste, I wouldn't bother, but would just buy a tub of gum tragacanth (you only need a small amount) and knead it into fondant of the colour you need for your detailing. It will set firm and still be edible (flower paste isn't).

What size cake are you making? Have you thought about making a madeira cake, as sponge may well not be able to hold the weight of a lot of fondant...

It will be three tiered and sponge can take the weight.

I've already ordered the flowerpaste,it just makes it easier!

As for shopping around, the white choc one is £2.50 per 250g on Amazon.cheapest price. According to cake charts it's 1250g for a 10inch round cake alone.add the other tiers and all the extras for the detailing I'll be doing and it could work out expensive for icing!

No BM etc here and I do want white choc flavour really!

I've seen recipes for the marshmallow fondant but have no idea what it tastes like! There is a white choc marshmallow one too.The other white chocolate one I've seen is just white choc and light corn syrup.

May try the marshmallow one if it has good reviews!
