Private spare bedroom tax.

How do I post a new question? I am new to this thanks0

Sorry Op but there isn't a bedroom 'tax'. All that's happening is the people who have been getting benefits for larger houses than they need are being asked to pay for the extra rooms they have, themselves.
Those people in private housing have never received the extra benefits. This 'bedroom tax' merely levels the playing field.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

So Council Tax isn't really a proxy for a tax penalising underutilisation of housing - how can it be when discounts are provided for under occupation?
It's more akin to a straight property tax.
but you get the discount if the house isn't under occupied and as it's a straight 25% it is still more expensive on larger house.0 -
I am all for it so long as it works the other way too.
I.e those that are overcrowded get a refund. So when 4 adults live in a 2 bed house they also get some amount of money refunded or less to pay in the first place.whether private or SH
As that will never happen then no thanks.63 mortgage payments to go.

Already do. Council tax covers this.0

Interesting to see the responses. It was just a whimsical thought. Maybe an overhaul of the council tax system to properly reflect housing would be more efficient. However a straight bedroom tax would certainly concentrate minds to the fact that money could be save by utilising available bedrooms.0

It would certainly my result in us utilising tbe spare bedrooms...as studies, halls, laundry rooms or anything that was not taxed. Perhaps we should reinstate the window tax?!I think....0 -

I already have a fairly unusual house ( as it stands today) that it has four ( ish) reception rooms.....some might say five , but only two bedrooms.
If council tax were to be rated on number of bedrooms as it stands today I would be very much quids in. This property, even when it had three bedrooms, would have been considerably more favourably rated if done on bedroom numbers!0
