    Also can someone give me advice on this please :-

    Earnings from self employment = £10,999.08
    Tax paid = £ 2199.82
    Expenses = £1857.23

    He brought a car so that he could get to work and back that cost him £1450.00 he uses it soley for work 6 days a week then just for pleasure on a sunday, it is in the bracket of emisions that he can claim 18% back so would it right to claim 18% back on 86% usage of the car for work ?

    Afraid I can't help with your car question. But in terms of this one, the personal allowance is a set amount and isn't pro-rated over time. What this means is that for the entire tax year your son's personal allowance is £9440 - doesn't matter whether he works 2 weeks or 52. It also spans all the jobs he's had during this time.

    Think that's right, I'm sure someone will correct me if not.

    Yes the personal allowance is for the whole year and will be applied to all employed and self employed earnings in that tax year.

    There are two options for the car; cost, depreciation and running costs or the 45p per mile.

    You need to make a quick calculation to work out the best option.

    What was he doing before this 21 week period? If he was claiming JSA or has had any other taxable income earlier in the tax year you have to declare that as well.
