Meat Buying

Hi All, i would be interested in what everyone did when buying their meat. I want to find out the best/cheapest way to buy meat, be it from supermarket, local butcher, meat van/auction?. Were a family of 3 and have a monthly food budget of £350. out of this we have to buy all the baby items nappy's etc, where also doing slimming world so need to buy lean/extra lean meats. The last few months i have been bulk buying meat from the meat vans at the local markets. Is this the cheapest option?

Regards

Cheapest would yellow label from the supermarket- up to 75% off , sometimes 90% if you get your timing right / visit the right supermarkets

lots of freezer space required when you find a great offer though! and some meal planning required in order to get defrosting right
School is important, but Rugby is importanter.

YS is great when you can do it but can't be guaranteed.

I find the 3 for £10 offers are quite useful. I unwrap and portion everything up for the freezer. I also shop at Aldi and their meat is good and quite reasonable (especially the gammon). The £4 beef joints are so good that I often buy a large one and cut it into small joints and some into cubes for casseroles.

I do SW too but I find the best way to economise is to have small portions of meat and loads of veg!!

You're very welcome to join us on the SW thread.:)

I get alot from the reduced to clear section. We get a tray of chicken breasts from the fish market for £18 and that's 5kg. I'd say £350 is alot for a month for three people. We are two adults and a toddler and spend £80 month not including nappies. £90 per month if you include them.

I've recently done a comparative shop for myself on meat. Beef, lamb, sausages and pork all worked out cheaper at my local butcher. Chicken was cheaper at the supermarket. I've also been comparing prices at this place http://www.roamingroosters.co.uk/ - saw them at an event - and the price seems to be quite competitive.

I think you're fortunate if local butcher is cheaper than SMs. Around here there are very few and many of those that remain have gone very upmarket, catering for the 'Chipping Sodbury/Farmers' Market' type people.

No the beef offer was a few weeks back, when it finished zoomed up to 7.50 so a big saving to be made, the leg of lamb is on offer now though and the pork shoulder and leg are still a good price.

Sainsburys have large beef roasting joints half price right now. £5.49 per kilo until 22/04.
