Default on mortgage

7 years ago I let my mortgage provider take back my house as I could not afford to keep up my mortgage payments and I moved into rented accommodation where I have been ever since. I had one mortgage statement from them in the first year but no demand for payment so they have my new address and I have heard nothing since.
Is there a period of time that can pass before they are unable to come back to me with this debt or can I expect contact and demand for closure on this debt for ever more?
